Reading the result

The break-even marketing cost per booking is the most useful number here. It tells you the most you can spend on ads, email or loyalty offers to win a booking direct before it becomes cheaper to let the platform have it.

This calculator compares commission with direct costs only. It does not model the demand a platform brings that you might lose, or the extra guest service work that direct bookings need.

Common questions

What OTA commission should I enter?

Use the rate you actually pay. Check your payout statements for each platform, since commission depends on the platform, the fee model you are on and any visibility programmes you have joined. If you use several platforms, enter a blended average.

What counts as a direct booking cost?

Card processing fees on direct payments, plus what you spend to win each direct booking: ads, email tools, a booking engine subscription or discounts for returning guests. Enter the processing fee as a percentage and the rest as a cost per booking.

Is moving every booking direct realistic?

Rarely. Platforms bring demand you would not otherwise reach. Start by modelling a modest share, such as repeat guests and longer stays, and see what that is worth.
